There's nothing that says unity like a large group of people all wearing the same T-shirt. Family reunions make people feel connected to their families, from the close relatives at home to the distant relatives who have traveled far to be a part of the reunion. Making T-shirts together is an activity that keeps the hands busy while conversations are happening and relationships are building. At the end of the reunion, each family member gets to take home his or her T-shirt creation, and they will remember the time they shared together each time they wear their reunion T-shirts.

    Tie-Dye T-Shirts

  1. Let family members know in advance that there will be a tie-dying activity at the reunion. Encourage them to bring any white T-shirts or articles of clothing that they would like to dye to the reunion. Tie-dye kits can be purchased at any art supply store fairly inexpensively. You may want to buy extra rubber gloves so more people can tie-dye at the same time. Also, having extra white T-shirts in a variety of sizes helps accommodate families who forget to bring their own.
  2. T-Shirt Painting

  3. T-shirt painting is a creative way to get the kids working together and keep them busy, stimulating their artistic talents at the same time. Purchase a quantity of fabric paints ahead of time at any art supply store, in a rainbow variety of colors. Also purchase white T-shirts in a variety of sizes. Let the kids decorate the T-shirts in any way they wish, or suggest a family reunion theme.
  4. Family T-Shirts

  5. You can order T-shirts printed in advance with your family's name and the reunion date on the front or back. Families should be notified in the reunion invitation about the cost of the T-shirts so they can contribute. Each family member gets a T-shirt at the reunion. Provide a quantity of fine-tipped permanent markers in a variety of colors, and let people decorate their T-shirts with drawings. Some people might want to collect signatures or messages from other family members on their shirts. Taking a photo of everyone in their shirts at the end of the reunion makes a delightful memory--and a happy front cover of the invitation for next year's reunion.
