Adobe Photoshop gives even the beginner the opportunity to create unique visions with her photographs. Beyond basic toning, Photoshop has a wide variety of special effects to enhance photos from presets to custom controls. Here are some ways to use the photo effects in Photoshop.

    Filters

The place to start is the Filter Gallery (Filter>Filter Gallery). Here, Photoshop gathers many of the special effects that can turn a normal photo into a painting, a drawing, a stylized image or something else. Each effect---from Poster Edges to Ocean Ripple to Reticulation---has slider controls to customize the view. A standard photo of a cyclist, for example, can become a Bas Relief or a Charcoal drawing or a poster. It even can be made into Notepaper as a background for stationary.
  2. Actions

More elaborate special effects are available by going to Window>Actions. These Actions are preset special effects such as Sepia Toning, Fluorescent Chalk, Aged Photo and Soft Posterize. Each of these contains a script that does several things to a photo to give it an unusual look, so make certain you are working on a saved copy of the photo. If you don't like what you get, go to File>Revert to return the photo to its original state.
  4. Other Effects

There are simpler effects in Photoshop, too. In Image>Adjustments>Photo Filter, for example, you can "warm" or "cool" an image using orange or blue respectively. For an unusual color cast, go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate to make the RGB image grayscale, then go to Image>Adjustments>Variations. You can give a photo a distinct color cast such as purple or red or green. You also can use the separate Filters such as Pointillize (Filter>Pixelate>Pointillize), or go for a surreal image by using Filter>Render>Difference Clouds.
