Homemade Remedies for a Sore Throat

Pharyngitis, known commonly as sore throat, can be incredibly inconvenient and painful. Commercially sold sore throat medications are often high in sugars or treat multiple symptoms. An array of natural ingredients, such as garlic and sage, boast remarkable efficiency in treating sore throat pain and irritation. Mix up one of these healthful potions for effective and rapid relief of sore throat symptoms.

Sage Leaves

Sage leaves are beneficial in treating a variety of ailments, including sore throat, gingivitis and indigestion. The therapeutic essential oils are released when heated and provide relief from the irritation and pain associated with a sore throat. To bring out the healing oils, steep 1 tsp. of chopped fresh sage leaves in 1 cup of boiling water. When the water has cooled, gargle as often as necessary. For flavor and more pain-fighting benefits, squeeze in 1 tsp. of fresh lemon juice.


Garlic is a natural ingredient used to treat ailments that require the dehydration of bodily fluids. A garlic gargle is beneficial in alleviating symptoms of sore throat caused by sinus irritation or allergies. Combine 1 tsp. of sliced garlic and 1 cup of boiling water. Allow the mixture to steep for five minutes. Tear parsley or mint leaves and add to the water, allowing the leaves to steep for an additional two minutes. Ensure the water is cool enough to gargle and toss in a pinch of salt immediately before use. Use the gargle as often as necessary for maximum benefit.

Alternatively, you may also choose to add the garlic to a clear broth and drink it occasionally. Heat the broth to lukewarm, and add in finely diced garlic directly before drinking. The broth should not cook the garlic.

Honey and Lemon

Honey and lemon are both great ingredients for treating a sore throat. Heat 1 cup of water and stir in 1 tsp. of honey and 1/2 tsp. of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Drink the honey lemon water as often as necessary for quick and efficient pain relief.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is used in a variety of home remedies and works well for treating a sore throat. Heat 1 cup of water and stir in 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar. Every hour, gargle a mouthful of the water and spit it out. Immediately thereafter, swallow a mouthful of the apple cider vinegar water. Repeat as necessary until the water is gone.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper is beneficial in the treatment of pain associated with sore throat. Stir 1/2 tsp. of cayenne pepper powder into 1 cup of warm water and gargle as necessary. Do not swallow the water, as the cayenne may cause stomach irritation. After touching the pepper, immediately wash your hands with soap and water. Do not touch sensitive areas such as your eyes in the meantime.

Other Methods

Gargle several times daily with warm salt water. Combine 1/2 tsp. of salt in 1 cup of water.

Combine 1/3 cup of spinach juice with 1/3 cup of carrot juice. Drink the mixture for a cooling, soothing sensation.
