Guide to Finding an Apartment
Moving and finding an apartment can be an exhausting process. It can be incredibly difficult to narrow down your choices and make a decision on the best price, location and terms. There are some things to consider when looking for an apartment.
-
Location
-
Consider the locations that will be most convenient for you. Determine how long it will take you to get to work or school. How far away are the amenities you need, such as grocery stores, gas stations, public transportation, retail stores, hardware stores? How close is the nearest police station, fire station or hospital? What are the crime statistics? Are there quality school systems? Are there activities for you and your family?
Price Range
-
One of the most important items to consider is price. The price of the apartment should fit your budget. The amenities of an apartment can vary, find out about costs outside of the rent, such as utilities, parking, trash, sewer, water and other assessment fees. Some apartments might include these items. If you are a member of the military or are an employee of the government or a large employer in the area, ask the rental agent if there are discounts for the apartment. Be upfront about what price ranges fit into your budget.

Lifestyle Changes
-
Most people don't choose an apartment that they anticipate moving from shortly after moving in. No matter what the duration of the rental agreement is, you should spend some time thinking about what your needs might be in the long term. For example, if you anticipate moving out of state in one year, you might want to choose a more basic apartment in anticipation of preparing for the move. Also, if there is a chance your family will grow in a year or so, you might want to find an apartment with more bedrooms.
