Although sweating is one of the body's main ways of removing toxins, excessive underarm sweating is a nuisance. Thankfully, there are easy, at home solutions you can try that will stop the perspiration and eliminate odor. Whether you try a lifestyle change or a simple homemade antiperspirant, there is a remedy made for you.

Start with Diet

  • What you eat can affect how much you sweat. According to Dr. Ben Kim, dairy sensitivities can be a source of excessive sweating. Eliminate dairy products for a couple of weeks to see if this affects your perspiration. Stress and anxiety can also play a part in excessive sweating. Vitamin B supplements can help with anxiety and stress, and may help to slow down excessive sweating. The International Hyperhidrosis Society recommends eliminating sodas, alcohol and spicy foods.

Easy Tips to Stop Sweating

  • Baking soda is a well known, inexpensive solution which neutralizes odors and dries up moisture. Either mix it with cornstarch and apply it with a pouf or cotton ball, or use it alone. The cornstarch adds extra antiperspirant protection.

    The International Hyperhidrosis Society also recommends relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation to help combat any excess sweating. This tip is a good reminder that the source of excess sweating is often an overactive nervous system. Taming the anxiety and stress will stop the sweat.

Essential Oils to Stop Sweat

  • Sage oil will act on pores, gently closing them to stop perspiration. Adding a little sage oil to the baking soda will give you an effective, homemade antiperspirant for pennies. Sage oil is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

    Other essential oils are known for their antimicrobial qualities, and though they will not help with perspiration, they will help with deodorizing. Rosemary, lavender, rose geranium and tea tree oil are all good choices for astringent and antimicrobial activity. These oils are also not usually irritating to the skin. Use approximately 2 drops for every 50 ml of base to be safe.

Herbs to Try

  • Herbal teas which may help to stop excessive sweating include nettle tea, sage tea and lemon balm. Lemon balm and nettle teas will strengthen the nervous system, and this can have an effect on excessive sweating. These two teas are also very safe and the herbs are readily available in both packaged form and bulk from health food stores. Sage tea is not as safe to drink as lemon balm and nettle tea. Use sage tea with the supervision of a doctor trained in herbal medicine.
