Learning any new language can be a challenge but there are ample online resources for students of German ranging from beginner to expert. Online language learning continues to evolve and can be just as effective, if not more so, than taking a university language course. Online German study allows you to work at your own pace and within your own needs and interests.

    Reading and Writing

  1. German is a common language with hundreds of resources online for learning the basics of reading and writing. A few sources like the BBC and university websites offer extensive overviews of the German language. There are also plenty of "word-a-day" websites and blogs that can allow you to slowly increase your vocabulary. See the resources section below.
  2. Listening and Speaking

  3. Listening and speaking are crucial to getting by in any language. SlowGerman podcasts are designed for the German learner. They talk about common events in more simplified, slower German with translatable texts to follow along. YouTube and WonderHowTo are also a great sources for free video lessons. Finally, you can take personalized lessons from teachers around the world using Skype.
  4. Interactive

  5. There are now a handful of online interactive language-learning sites like LingQ, Mango Languages, Mocha and Byki that have hundreds of German lessons. These comprehensive programs include everything for the self learner from reading and writing to listening and speaking. LingQ seems to offer the most comprehensive German course.
