Don't be afraid to go dark and dramatic--full bathrooms usually have little wall space because of the tile, windows and doors, and the effect will not be cave-like. Also consider who uses the bathroom. The look you choose for your contemporary spa master bath may be quite different to your choice for the children's bathroom, where brighter, primary colors may be more suitable.

With a little more planning and work (and several rolls of blue painter's tape) you can paint punchy stripes, color blocks and geometric designs. A simpler way to introduce a second color without quite so much taping is to paint an accent wall. This can be a good compromise between having the whole room a dramatic color or having it all neutral.
Consider stenciling. Kits are available at many craft and paint stores with either precut designs or materials to make your own designs. Stencils can be decorative abstracts, lettering or specific designs for kids' bathrooms.
Don't want to go to the bother of faux painting? There are several special-effect paints on the market. Look into dramatic metallics, sand- or suede-textured paint or old fashioned, environmentally friendly milk paint.
