Measure and cut the fleece to the size desired for your blanket. Look carefully at the fleece to determine if there is a wrong and a right side. If there is a print on the fleece, the right side will be obvious. If the fleece is a solid color, the right and wrong sides might be less obvious. Look for the side of the fleece that is more dull and resembles felt to identify the wrong side of the fleece.
Leave the corners square or use a plate to trace around the corners and make them rounded. Turn under 3/8 inch around the entire edge of the fleece and pin in place. Never iron fleece; the heat from the iron will melt the fleece fibers. Either hand- or machine-stitch the folded edge in place with a straight stitch.
Stitch a blanket by hand using a double length of yarn in a color that either matches or contrasts the fleece colors. Use the yarn to sew a simple whipstitch around the entire outer edge to finish the blanket's edge. -
Follow the same procedure for the hand-sewn finishing, up to the point where you have turned under the 3/8-inch fold around the entire blanket edge and pinned it in place. Machine-stitch the folded edge in place with a straight stitch.
Use a sewing machine's zigzag stitch to finish the edges or use an overlock stitch with a serger to finish the edges. -
No-Sew FleeceMeasure and cut the fleece to the size desired for your blanket.
Measure a two-inch square in each of the four corners and cut out this square to create a notch in the corners. Now make 2-inch cuts every inch around the entire outer edge of the fleece. Cut every tab to a point so that they resemble a picket fence with pointed ends. Make a small slit in the bottom center of each tab and push the point of the tab through the slit. Pull the tab tightly through. The effect will be different if you push the tab through from the front or the back of the fleece. Repeat with every tab around the blanket to create an attractive pointed edge.
