Sugaring Hair Removal

Sugaring hair removal is similar to waxing. Both methods involve spreading the mixture onto the skin and pulling it off with strips of cloth. These methods of hair removal remove the hair's root. Results can last for weeks, according to a report by Iowa State University.

    1. Prepare the Skin for Sugaring

      • Clean the area where the hair is going to be removed. The skin should be clean and free of lotions and oils for the mixture to stick to the hair. The hair should be at least 1/4 of an inch long or the process may not work. It also should not be much longer than 1/4 of an inch. Trim the hair if necessary.

      Basic Sugaring Recipe

      • Gather together a saucepan, a candy thermometer and a plastic bowl with a lid. Place 2 cups granulated sugar and 1/4 cup each of water and fresh lemon juice into the pan. Stir to mix and dissolve the sugar.

Place the pan on the stove over low heat and watch for bubbles to begin to rise around the edges. Place the candy thermometer into the mixture and continue cooking until it reaches a temperature of 250 degrees F. Remove from the heat and pour it into the plastic container. Let it cool to 100 degrees F or lower to avoid burns.

      Honey Sugaring Recipe

      • Combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, the juice of 1/2 a lemon and 1/4 cup of honey in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it on high for 2 minutes. Remove from the microwave and allow it to cool until it is just warm to the touch. Ensure that the center of the mixture has cooled sufficiently. Use an instant-read thermometer and look for a temperature less than 100 degrees F to be safe.

      Application and Storage

      • Dust the skin where the sugaring is to be done with cornstarch. Spread the cooled mixture in the direction that the hair grows. Use a wooden stick or a dull kitchen knife to spread it in a thin layer. Press a strip of cotton muslin cloth on top of the sugaring mixture. Remove it by holding the skin tight and pulling quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth.

If there is leftover sugaring material, it can be stored by covering it and leaving it at room temperature. Spreading it on the skin will cause it to melt slightly and allow a thin layer to be achieved. If it is too thick, warm it in a microwave oven 10 seconds at a time. It only needs to be slightly warmer than room temperature.
