Baby's first birthday is a major milestone; when you have triplets turning 1, there are three times as many things to consider. A themed party that fits all three children is best, but their individuality should be showcased as well.

    1. Invitations

      • Invitations set the tone and theme for the entire celebration. For triplet girls, you could use a theme of princesses or tiaras. You could use an invitation depicting three tiaras and the words "You won't want to miss the giggles, a hug and a kiss; it's tiaras times three for the princesses to be; join us for fun as we turn 1." Triplet boys' invitations could mention "three times the trouble." Add a cute little poem or a picture of your triplets to make it more personal.

For a mixed set of triplets including a combination of boys and girls, you could use an actual photo of your babies, or have three "cartoon" babies on the invitation. The girl(s) can have a bow to differentiate them. Use the invitation wording from Lil' Duck Duck (See Resources):
"Late night feedings and diapers galore - The spit up and laundry, Oh what a chore!
But the smiles and laughter, It's all so much fun
The Smith triplets are turning 1!"

Another option is to use characters from your theme, such as a lion, monkey and giraffe for a safari or jungle theme. Baby cowboys and cowgirls, or three cowboy hats, in pink for girls and blue or brown for the boys, would fit with a western theme. One character or symbol should be used for each child.

      Themes

      • Boys' themes can include sports, fire trucks, cowboys, cars or planes. Girls' themes can include butterflies, hearts, dolls or rainbows. If you have a combination of boys and girls, try rubber ducks, cowboy and cowgirls, bees and ladybugs, or a safari theme. Incorporate something special and specific for each of the children.

      Decorations

      • Decorate with balloons, banners and small details that pull your theme together. If you are having a bee and ladybug celebration, there should be bee and ladybug decorations hanging from the ceiling, or balloons. They should be in groups of three. Don't overdo, as your children are only 1 and won't remember this celebration.

      Location

      • Hold the party at your home, after naptime if possible. Your babies are used to being at home, so their comfort levels will be higher there than they would be having so many people fuss over them in an unfamiliar setting. If you can't hold the party at home, take some sort of comfort item for each of the children.

      Cake

      • Serve a "main" cake that is large enough for all of your guests. Have it decorated to match your theme and represent each of the kids. All of their names should be on the cake and each should have a candle. Alternatively, bake or buy three smaller cakes so they each have their own. If you do it this way, add something special on each cake to represent the individual child.

As with any first birthday, have "smash" cakes on hand if you want those priceless pictures of your babies covered in their very first birthday cake. Again, each child should have her own.

      Gifts

      • Do not mention gifts on the invitations, unless you are stating, "No gifts, please." Even that is questionable etiquette. Do not include a wish list or anything of the sort. Do not expect everyone to bring three gifts. Keep track of all of the gifts and who gave them to send thank you notes.

If your guests ask what to get the triplets, you can let them know what each child likes or let them know if you are saving for a large item for the children collectively, such as a new swing set. Some people will give matching outfits or toys, others will differentiate among the kids and still others will give one gift meant for the three to share.
