Pet odors can permeate into every corner of a house. Once pet odor gets into carpet and furniture, it can feel as though the smell will never go away. For certain, the odors can be hard to remove once they have set in, but getting rid of pet odors is possible. Home remedies can remove the smell without pouring toxins into your house.
Baking Soda as a Remedy for Pet Odors in Fabric and Carpets
Baking soda absorbs moisture and odor as well as odor-causing bacteria. Sprinkle a dusting of baking soda over an entire carpet to help pull the odors out. Sprinkle a heavier dose directly over areas that are causing the odors, enough so that the area has a visibly white layer of baking soda. Brush the powder into the carpet with either a scrub brush or hard-bristled broom. Allow the baking soda to sit overnight. Vacuum and repeat until the odor is gone.
Vinegar as a Remedy for Pet Odors on any Surface
Vinegar is a natural bacterial killer and very effective at getting odors out of fabrics. Use 1 cup of vinegar in the clothes washer when washing pet bedding to remove any smells that linger in blankets or bedding. Spray a mixture of 1/2 cup vinegar and 2 cups water onto areas of the carpet or other fabrics where there are odors. Let the mixture soak in and then dry to eliminate odors. For very tough and set-in pet stains and odors, sprinkle the area with baking soda, then use a sponge soaked in a vinegar-and-water solution to wet the area. Allow the baking soda/vinegar to bubble and scrub with the sponge. Allow to dry completely and form a hard powder. Vacuum the area. Wait an hour and vacuum again.
Dry Sprinkle Borax or Tide to Remove Pet Odors
Borax is an effective home remedy. It acts as a deodorizer that can be sprinkled directly onto carpets, brushed in, allowed to sit and then vacuumed. This method is also effective with other dry laundry detergents such as Tide. Sprinkle the detergent onto the carpet and let sit overnight before vacuuming. You may need to follow up with an additional vacuuming about an hour later as the first one may not have removed all of the detergent.
Rosemary or Tea Tree Oil
If urine caused the pet odor, clean the area with one the above home remedy methods, then spray rosemary oil or tea tree oil over the affected area. This helps deter the pet from returning to the spot. These oils have a strong odor, which pets are very sensitive to. Reapply the oil to the spot with a light spray once a week or so until your pet learns not to use that area as a litter box.
