Smartboards are a common element in many classrooms today. Their interactive capabilities make learning fun and educational for kids of all ages. Use your Smartboard properly to teach lessons that will enhance and enrich your language arts classroom.

    Writing and Editing

  1. Use your Smartboard to teach students about writing and editing. You can download lessons from the SMART website or create your own. Have students write creative assignments using specific guidelines. Or ask them to read a passage from the Smartboard and identify the errors in grammar and spelling.
You can use the Smartboard to display student work samples, and have the class work on improving the writing in the samples. You should ask permission from the student before displaying his work or use a sample from another class period. Always remove the name from the student's work to maintain confidentiality. Have students use the Smartboard to identify mistakes and weak points in the writing, and then they can re-write their own assignment on the same topic. For a variation, you can create the writing sample instead of using student work, or you can save a sample from the previous year to use.
  2. Grammar Games

  3. You can use the Smartboard to create grammar games for students. While grammar is not usually the most enjoyable language arts topic, the Smartboard can make it more fun than it has been in the past. Use the board to have students unscramble words and identify their parts of speech, or download a grammar game from the SMART website for use in your classroom.
You can also have students use the Smartboard to identify the parts of speech in a sentence. Give them sample sentences and ask them to identify the nouns, pronouns, verbs and other grammatical elements. Or put mistakes into the sentences and have a competition to see who can correctly identify and fix those mistakes.
  4. Online Game Sites

  5. The Smartboard can be used in conjunction with established online gaming sites for classroom use. This turns your Smartboard into a game show screen for the class. Some sites contain literacy games and others have read-aloud stories and videos for your students to enjoy. You can also use your Smartboard to set up a traditional classroom game, such as a quiz show format. Use it to play classroom versions of "Jeopardy," "Memory" and "Family Feud." The possibilities are as endless as your creativity and Internet access.
