Massage Treatments for Hard Fat & Cellulite
Cellulite occurs when fat cells enlarge and push against the skin. This creates unsightly lumps and dimples in the thighs and buttocks. Hormonal changes in the body, such as pregnancy and menopause, can also create cellulite. Other times, cellulite forms because of poor circulation related to lack of exercise, excess fat or fluid retention. Regardless of the reason, there are treatments to reduce and prevent cellulite.

Techniques

Massage reduces the appearance of cellulite, improves circulation, removes toxins from the body and protects the skin by keeping it properly moisturized. Massage the area using long upward strokes alternated with firm, circular, upward motions. Massaging with essential oils will help soften the skin to break up the fat stored against it. Massage can be done anytime, though if you're using an anti-cellulite cream or lotion, it's best to massage this in after your morning shower to aid absorption.
Oils and Lotions
-
When selecting essential oils to use on cellulite, you'll want the oils best for improving circulation, reducing fluids and toning. The essential oils best for improving circulation include lemon and lavender; for reducing fluids, juniper, rosemary, cypress and geranium; and for toning, grapefruit and lavender. For anti-cellulite recipes, see References. One good recipe combines 3 drops of cypress oil, 3 drops of lemon oil and 3 drops of juniper oil with 15 ml of a carrier oil such as rosehip seed, grape seed, jojoba or avocado. Put all ingredients in a dark glass bottle and shake it gently.
If you prefer to massage with a lotion instead of an oil, you can make your own anti-cellulite lotion by adding 20 ml of witch hazel, 16 drops of lemon oil, 16 drops of cypress oil, 8 drops of juniper oil, 8 drops of lavender oil, and 8 drops of geranium oil to 125 ml of an unscented natural lotion base (no mineral or petroleum products).
Prevention
-
Although cellulite is sometimes genetic or caused by other health conditions, there are some preventative measures you can take. Stay at your normal weight; and exercise regularly to stay toned, replace the fat with muscle and improve circulation. To further improve circulation, avoid sitting or standing for long periods of time. Drink water and herbal teas to flush toxins from the body. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
