Start with a light blue color if you're going for a daytime sky design or midnight blue for a nighttime sky. Use wallpaper borders or murals with clouds or the moon and stars around the walls either at crib height or around the ceiling where the baby can see them lying on his back.
If you're more creative, use stencils or hand paint the sun, moon and stars or a rocket ship or even the nursery rhyme "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." You can also use glow-in-the-dark moon and star stickers from craft or toy stores, or cut stars from gold poster board and use line and hooks to hang them from the ceiling.
To create a cloud mural, use a light blue background, then mix four parts faux glaze to one part white paint. Dip a sea sponge into the paint, blotting the excess, and press the sponge onto the walls to create the clouds. If you're experienced with air-brushing techniques, you can create softer and more detailed clouds, as well as add rainbows and birds with different colors.
For three-dimensional clouds, sew pillows in cloud shapes, attaching them to the wall or ceiling with Velcro strips. - Purchase themed bedding from companies like sumersault.com and its Rocket Baby line, which includes a quilt, bumper, sheet, dust ruffle and blanket, or sew your own using patterns from craft or fabric stores. Use space and sky-themed stencils or stickers to decorate the crib, cupboards, shelves and other furniture in the nursery.
- Gather together accessories to complement your nursery's celestial theme, such as globes and lamp shades with the moon and stars. Other items that you can either purchase already made or create yourself by painting plain unfinished furniture items from craft stores, include bookends, clocks, star night lights, door knobs and door hangers, and rocket wall pockets.
