- There are several methods for selecting hair inside Photoshop CS3. If the hair is fairly flat without a lot of stray locks, you can select the "Magnetic Selection" tool from the toolbar, and then click along the outside edge of the hair to make a selection. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get a good clean selection this way. If the hair is more complex, you can try selecting the "Pen" tool and clicking along the edge of the hair to add points and lines to form an outline. You will want to add a lot of points, since this will improve the chances of a good selection. Now right click on the path outline you have created and click "Make Selection." Another way to select hair is to go to the bottom of the toolbar and click on the "Quick Mask" icon. Now select a brush and paint over the hair, adjusting the size of the brush as you work to fit the section of hair you are working on. Then click on the "Quick Mask" icon again, and the mask turns into a selection.
- If you want to change the color of hair in Photoshop CS3, there are a couple of ways to accomplish this task. First, you will want to use one of the above methods to select the hair to isolate it from the rest of the image. In the first method, select "Edit," then "Adjustments" and click "Hue/Saturation." In the dialog box that opens, click on "Colorize" and then move the "Hue" and "Saturation" sliders until the color is what you want. Another way to color the hair is to select a very thin "Brush," make the "Foreground" color what you want, and slowly paint over the existing hair. This will take a long time. You will need to change the brush color several times to add highlights and shadows.
- If you want to add hair to an image, either because the person has no hair, or because they just don't have enough, there are two good ways to do it. One is to again select the hair (in the case of "no hair," select where you want the hair), and then slowly paint the hair in, with the highlights and shadows. Another approach is to use a "Hair" plug-in. Several companies offer Photoshop plug-ins that can add hair or fur to an image. One example of this is the Eye Candy "Fur" filter, which you must purchase and install. Select the hair. Click on Filters, and go to Eye Candy 4000 (or whatever version you have) and click on the "Fur" filter. Now change the setting to "Long and Flowing." Adjust the length, curl and wave to suit your needs and hit "OK." You may have to do this several times, slightly altering the settings each time to get a layered look.
