It's natural to feel nervous on the day of a job interview; your performance could determine your career path for years to come. Approaching the big day with forethought, planning and common sense will give you every advantage for a great first impression, and may even give you the edge over other applicants. Taking care of small things, like eating breakfast and knowing where to park, to large issues like educating yourself about the company and presenting yourself as a professional, will make the job interview process easier.
Review Your Preparation
By the time the big day arrives, you should have already researched the company and know enough about them to avoid major gaffes in conversation, anticipated some interview questions and rehearsed the answers with a friend to make your replies sound easy and polished, and driven the route to the office so you know how much time to allow. You will also know where to park, if you need to pass through security at any point and where the office is located in the building. Schedule your arrival for approximately 15 minutes before the interview so you'll be on time, with a few minutes to spare. Take some time in the morning to review your information, lightly scanning your research so everything is fresh in your mind. Place a notepad, pens and a few copies of your resume in your briefcase or professional portfolio binder and set your keys on top of it so you don't forget it.
Confidence and Focus
You will definitely need to focus on this day, so eat a light breakfast containing protein and complex carbs for energy and stamina. A whole-grain muffin topped with peanut butter and fruit works well as does a low-sugar energy bar. This will also keep your stomach from growling during the interview. Before you get dressed, take a few minutes and calm your mind. Think about how well-qualified you are for this position, and how you're the best person for the job. Build your self-confidence so the interviewer will have confidence in you as well.
Appearance and Manner
Your outfit should already be laid out when you get up on the day of a job interview. Choose something conservative in color and style. A suit always makes an impression. If you're a woman, you can choose a skirt and blazer combo. Attend to your personal grooming and hygiene before getting dressed. Don't over-do the cologne, perfume or makeup. Once you're dressed, check your reflection from the front and back in case of wardrobe malfunctions, such as unseen rips or tears. As you head out the door, remember to be polite, confident and clear in your speech from the time you enter the building to the moment you leave the parking lot. Manners always matter and a pleasant smile never hurts.
