Semi-Formal Dress Advice
"Semi-formal" can be a frightening and confusing term for the Average Joe. Its loose description can vary depending on the time, place and type of event. However, knowing the guidelines to wardrobe etiquette for semi-formals can help prevent headaches when planning the perfect outfit from head to toe.

Fabrics To Consider
-
For some, fabric may seem like a minor detail. But when attending a semi-formal event there are certain fabrics that are considered proper and others that are not. Women should stick to silk, velvet, rayon, cashmere, high quality polyester brocades and velour. Regular wool clothing should be avoided because it appears too casual, even if it is used in some business suits.
However, men are free to wear wool garbardine or cashmere. Even a wool blend is acceptable. It's linen and seersucker suits that they should avoid.
Women
-
Women have the liberty of being creative when it comes to planning their semi-formalwear. Dresses, pants suits and dress suits are all acceptable for the occasion. Silk is a popular fabric for female attire, but leave the slinky clubbing dress in the closet. The outfit shouldn't exceed one inch above the knee. A classy cocktail dress is perfectly acceptable. Pants suits with a dressy top as well as a nice skirt and blouse can be worn if they fit the fabric guidelines.
When it comes to footwear, women are expected to dress in heels, flats or sandals that are preferably color coordinated with the rest of the ensemble. Flip flops of any kind are considered casual and should not be worn.
Men
-
Unfortunately semi-formal etiquette doesn't list a dress shirt and khakis as part of the attire for men unless specifically stated. So unless the event suggests a blazer and slacks, men are expected to wear a suit complete with a button down dress shirt and either a bow or neck tie. A vest is optional but could be a good touch, especially if you're looking to impress. But don't go over the top. Remember that this is a semi-formal. You should not walk into the event wearing a tux. Don a pair of dress shoes, such as Oxfords, that match your attire and you should be set.
Remember: no matter what the event is, there is nothing formal about sports jerseys or sneakers.
