Fire extinguishers should be in every home. There are many different types of fire extinguishers available. Most homeowners use the one classified as ABC. It is a multipurpose fire extinguisher and can be used on all the different classes of fires.

Everyone in the home should learn how to use the fire extinguisher. When using a fire extinguisher, make sure your back is to an unobstructed escape route. Stand no closer than 6 feet from the fire. The most efficient way of using a fire extinguisher is using the P.A.S.S. method: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep.

    Pull the Pin

  1. There is a pin located at the handle and trigger on a fire extinguisher. It is easily recognized as a pull ring. When the pin is pulled, it unlocks the operating lever. With the lever unlocked, the trigger can be operated on the extinguisher.
  2. Aim

  3. Aim the fire extinguisher nozzle at the base of the fire. Aiming low will prevent spraying where it will do no good. By spraying at the base of the fire, the extinguishing agent is released into the source of the fire.
  4. Squeeze the Handle

  5. After aiming the nozzle at the fire, squeeze the handle or trigger to release the fire-fighting chemical from the extinguisher. The chemical will come out with some force, so be sure to have a grip on the handle and the nozzle.
  6. Sweep

  7. With the handle depressed and the nozzle aimed, sweep from side to side at the base of the fire. Move forward toward the fire and continue sweeping back and forth at the base until the fire is out. If any part of the fire reignites, repeat the sweeping process.
  8. Installation and Maintenance

  9. Fire extinguishers should be in plain view of everyone in the home. If it cannot be hung on a wall, it can be hung on the inside of a kitchen cabinet door; however everyone must know where it is.

Rechargeable fire extinguishers must be recharged after every use. Service companies that do this are listed under "fire extinguishers" in the Yellow Pages. Disposable fire extinguishers must be disposed of after use even if they have not been fully discharged.

A fire extinguisher should be inspected on an annual basis. There is an indicator dial on most home fire extinguishers. This dial shows how much charge is left on the fire extinguisher or how effective it will be if needed.
