Making soap can be a lucrative hobby for many people, especially if you know all of the best recipes. The ingredients available for soap making vary in quality so what goes in the recipe makes a big difference. Some of the best ingredients to use in a homemade soap recipe are organic. Organic soap can be made for a multitude of personalities, skin types and preferences.
Melt and Pour
The Melt and Pour method is one of the easiest ways to make soap at home. It consists of simply melting prefabricated soap in a double boiler, instead of making the soap base on your own. Melt and Pour soap base can easily be found in craft stores and on soap making websites. Many Melt and Pour soap bases are made with glycerin, but specialty shops and websites often carry organic alternatives. Melt and Pour soap bases make it make it more convenient to focus your time on the recipe and the customization of your organic soap.
Combine different amounts of essential oils into an emulsifying carrier oil to experiment with scents. To make a calming soap for a relaxing soak in the tub, use a mixture of three drops of lavender essential oil with two drops of jasmine essential oil into a saucer. Add about 1 tbsp. of emulsified rose oil to the saucer and mix vigorously by sucking it up with a pipette and spitting it back out into the saucer. Do this about 10 times. Suck it back into the pipette and inject it into 1 lb. of melted soap base. Mix the melted mixture gently with a long handled wooden spoon. While the scented base is simmering, crush 4 tbsp. full of lavender flower buds with a mortar and pestle. Crush it into a fine powder and sprinkle in about 1 tsp. of sea salt. Toss the herb and salt concoction into the soap base and mix gently for two minutes. Pour the base into a small shoebox that is lined with wax paper. Before covering with the lid of the shoebox, sprinkle a very fine layer of oatmeal on top of the cooling soap. Let it settle undisturbed for a week.
For an organic bubble bath mixture, use the same Melt and Pour soap base that you would use for bar soap. Melt 2 lbs. of it in a double boiler for 20 minutes, then reduce it to a simmer. Mix 1 cup of emulsifying rose oil with 1 cup of rose hydrosol. Rose hydrosol is a water-based herbal essence that has a very light floral scent. Put three or four drops of deep red food coloring to give it a pinkish tint, and add it to the melted soap base. Mix it very gently for about three minutes, or until the hydrosol concoction is evenly throughout the base. Take the soap off of the heat and let it cool until it is lukewarm. It must still be warm to touch, as you pour it into a bottle of your choice. Let it sit for 24 hours, and shake it vigorously before using it.
