Home Remedy for Asthmathumbnail
Respiratory System

Asthma is a respiratory illness that causes its sufferers to have difficulty breathing, especially exhaling air from the lungs. Asthma is an allergic reaction in the respiratory system that causes the muscles supporting the airways to become restricted by spasmodic contractions. Many irritants can trigger an asthmatic episode. These include environmental factors such as weather and dust, and foods such as milk, eggs and wheat. A home remedy for asthma may help to avoid an asthma attack.

      • Lemons, honey, garlic and ginger are easy-to-find foods that provide respiratory support for asthma sufferers.

Honey has antibacterial and healing properties that support respiration. You can take it internally, or according to Home Remedies for Asthma, the honey vapors are inhaled for asthma relief. Garlic also has antibacterial properties, and it helps to cut down mucus and open up breathing. Ginger helps to release mucus from the walls of the airways and to expel them from the body through coughing.

Alone and together, these ingredients will open up the respiration and may bring relief from, or prevent, an asthma attack. Combine 1 squeezed lemon, 2 shredded garlic cloves, ½ teaspoon of shredded ginger and 3 tbsp. of honey. Mix well and take 1 to 2 tsp. in the morning and in the evening, to calm the difficult breathing caused by asthma.

      Mullein and Sage

      • Make a tea of mullein leaves and sage, using about 1 tsp. each, and drink a cup each day. Mullein has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help it to relieve asthma and other respiratory conditions. However, do not use mullein seeds, as they are toxic. Sage's antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and relaxant properties are beneficial in the management of asthma.

      Lemon or Lime and Water

      • Lemons and limes are antiseptic and can break down mucus. Add 2 tbsp. of lemon or lime juice to 1 tbsp. of water. Take this in the morning and in the evening to help relieve asthma. Water, lemons and limes all have purifying properties. Water helps to flush out toxins and purify the blood, while lemons and limes have antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.

      Wild Cherry Bark

      • Brew a cup of wild cherry bark to help relieve the symptoms of asthma and to calm the respiratory system. Wild cherry bark has anti-inflammatory properties that will help to reduce the inflammation developed during an asthma attack, and it also works as an expectorant to expel the excess mucus buildup in the lungs and airways from the body.

      Other Home Remedies

      • Other asthma home remedies include eating figs to help drain mucus and using bishop's weed as an expectorant. Indian gooseberry may strengthen immunity, bitter gourd root has antiviral properties and drumstick leaves have antibacterial properties. All are rich in vitamin C and have been used as asthma remedies.

Furthermore, a diet low in fats, proteins and carbohydrates may also improve the asthmatic condition. Get fresh air and exercise, and once a week give your body a daytime break from foods, as these may help to alleviate the symptoms of asthma.
