A potato ricer is a fun kitchen gadget that can be used many ways. It is similar to a potato masher but allows the potato to be pushed through what looks like an oversized garlic press. From mashed potatoes to pie fillings, a potato ricer is helpful in completing a task in a fraction of the time.

    Mashed Potatoes

  1. It is sometimes difficult to make mashed potatoes with no lumps, so this is the perfect appliance to use when you want smooth, creamy mashed potatoes. Cook the potatoes and one at a time, push through the ricer. They come out in strings, sort of like spaghetti noodles. Add milk and butter.
  2. Sweet Potato Pie Filling

  3. Sweet potato pie is a fantastic dessert, and the potato ricer helps make the pie filling. Cook your sweet potatoes as you normally would, skin the potatoes and push through the potato ricer. This results in creamy, lump-free pie filling with a smooth consistency.
  4. Hash Browns

  5. Potato ricers work wonders when making hash browns. To get browned, crispy hash browns, you need to eliminate moisture. Skin the potatoes and grate with a cheese grater. Put a few tablespoons of oil in a pan. While that heats, put a handful of your grated potatoes into the potato ricer and press firmly to remove excess moisture. The goal is to release the extra water; do not push the potatoes through the holes of the ricer.
  6. Fruit Juices

  7. Potato ricers double as fruit juicers for lemons, limes and small oranges. Cut the fruit in half, place the cut side on the bottom of the potato ricer and squeeze. The juice filters through the holes of the ricer without releasing the seeds and pulp of the fruit.
