Make prom a little different this year.

We have all seen the movie magic version of what a prom should be, but don't feel that you have to stick to a preconceived set of expectations. While you will still want to make traditionalists happy, there are also ways to customize the prom to add a sense of freshness to an idea that has been around for decades. Scrapping old traditions or incorporating new ones can ensure a prom that appeals to more attendees.

    Ditch the Theme

  1. Seems like nearly every prom out there is hinged on a theme. Why not distinguish your school by getting rid of the theme? Not only will it be easier to coordinate decorations and outfits, the students will probably be happier as well. Before trying this drastic step, consider whether the move is worth any potential fallout, and consider putting the issue to a student vote so they feel more a part of a process. It could be that only those planning the prom are concerned with the theme, and they might be relieved to not have to come up with something both original and memorable.
  2. Be More Inclusive

  3. Make the prom a more democratic endeavor by allowing all students to contribute to the process. For example, instead of assigning student council and prom committees with the prom details, let all organizations share in the planning of the event. This would promote unity among all student body groups. Keep in mind, however, that while many students and organizations may voice an interest in prom planning, the hard work unfortunately usually falls on student council and the prom committee. The important thing is that the students are made to feel like they had an opt-in throughout the process.
  4. Incorporate Multimedia and Social Networking

  5. In this Internet age, it is easier than ever to compile interesting content for audiences. Why not create a movie for prom about the school year and show it at the event? Alternatively, you could hold a short film or song contest among the student body with a school-themed prompt. Because of social networking, there is no reason your prom can't have a MySpace or Facebook page. Such platforms will foster better communication and can even garner feedback for planning. It's also a great tool for announcements and updates.
  6. Incorporate Purpose

  7. Make the prom special by adding additional meaning to the event. Perhaps find a family in need in your town and donate a portion of the proceeds from prom ticket sales to that family. Alternatively, you could donate to a charity. Also consider green alternatives when planning the prom, and make a special announcement on prom night about this accomplishment. These steps could include efficient errands and locally purchased products intended to reduce carbon emissions, and incorporating recycling bins and sustainable eating and drinking utensils at the event.
