Genealogy, one of the most popular hobbies in North America, involves researching and documenting family trees. To begin, a researcher typically gathers information from living family members, such as parents, grandparents and aunts and uncles. After that point, research can cost money. Joining local genealogy societies and sites such as ancestry.com can be extremely helpful, but they normally involve paying a fee. There are ways to grow your family tree for free.

  1. Libraries

    • Visit your local library's family history section. You may find books on your surname or regional books detailing family histories. Books from genealogical organizations, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, may have valuable resource books that will help you track ancestors. Local genealogy societies may have libraries open to the public filled with family history books. Call your local LDS Mormon Church, which compiles masses of geneological information, and see if they have a local family history library open to the general public.

    Online

    • Take advantage of the many free online resources to grow your family tree. Cyndi's List offers over a quarter of a million links to genealogy websites. Many of those websites provide information for free. Ancestry.com, which is a pay-for-membership website, has a wealth of family tree information, and you can have a free trial membership for two weeks. But be warned, the site can be addicting for a genealogist and you may find yourself paying for a membership when the trial period ends. The Church of Latter Day Saints has a family search website that is free--included in resources.

    Downloads

    • When you start collecting your family tree data you may wish to display it on a family tree chart. There are websites such as Misbach Enterprises that offer several free family tree charts in pdf form for downloading and printing. Family Tree Magazine's website also offers free charts for download, along with a variety of genealogy research worksheets.
