Scrapbooking can be an individual or family hobby. It is an outlet for creativity that serves as an organizational tool for memories. Packets of premade templates with matching stickers, ribbons and beads are available at most craft stores, but they don't allow much creativity and can be costly. Homemade scrapbooks and embellishments are nice alternatives.

    Books

  1. Cut apart shirt, moving or postal boxes into pieces that are the same width and length. Layer the pieces in descending order of thickness or in haphazard order. Punch holes along the sides or top. Tie with yarn or ribbons
Turn old cardboard children's books into scrapbooks. To begin, carefully scrape the pages with a knife until the pictures and words are almost gone. Paint the pages, allow them to dry and glue and decorate them.
Use index cards to create small scrapbooks, which you can put together more quickly. Keep them in box or clip them together.
Many stores give out free photo books with the purchase of photos. Instead of just filling these with pictures, alternate pages with pictures and scrapbook paper. Write a description for each photo.
  2. Formats

  3. Think about making a scrapbook for an annual event, such as your family's yearly Fourth of July party. Keep mementos and take pictures. Surprise your guest the following year with the scrapbook. Add to the scrapbook year after year to see how kids have grown, hairstyles change and fashions come and go.
Many web pages contain format ideas. You can duplicate the ideas or modify them for your particular book. Some sites even allow you to print pages for free.
Chronological formats are easy and sensible. Consider categorization for formats. Group together all birthday parties, new babies, weddings and park trips.
  4. Decorations

  5. Embellishments give scrapbooks texture and uniqueness. Old jeans that your son wore daily make a pretty blue background and are meaningful. Wrap ribbons around the top of a page or create cool designs with mismatched sizes and colors.
Keep birthday party, wedding and shower invitations.
Don't toss broken bracelets or earrings. Use the beads or charms for scrapbook pages.
Flip through magazines and look for colorful pictures and words. Many periodicals contain informative articles about your interests, such as gardening or movies. Cut out these articles and place them next to your matching photos, ticket stubs or dried flowers.
Cut paper into small "memory notes"' Write down thoughts and reactions to certain events.
