- When applying acrylic nails, you may find it can be a tricky process. Head to the salon if you don't know how to do them yourself. If you're going to attempt your own, remember some important application tips. Prime the nail by washing it carefully in acetone nail polish remover before applying. The oils that appear naturally on your fingernails can cause the acrylic to adhere poorly. Cut your cuticles before you apply the nails, as even a small piece can cause the nails to not adhere properly.
- When you have acrylic nails, you must be careful about some of the activities you do. The easier you are on your nails, the longer your acrylics will last. Avoid biting or picking at your nails, which can cause them to crack or peel away from your fingernails. Activities such as typing also might put pressure on the acrylic, causing it to come off. Avoid putting too much pressure on them while performing everyday activities, such as opening a soda can, or heavy-duty activities, such as trying to use your nail as a screwdriver. Be gentle with your acrylics, and keep them away from damaging substances, such as acetone nail polish remover.
- When you are ready to remove your acrylic nails, do so with care or see a professional. Simply pulling them off could result in permanent damage to your fingernails. Cut the acrylics down as short as possible so you don't have as much to remove. Before removing them, place a layer of petroleum jelly on the skin surrounding your fingernails to protect them from excess drying. Use a large bowl of acetone nail polish remover and soak your fingers in it for at least 20 minutes. This should soften them enough to be able to peel off. If they are not coming off easily, continue soaking them until they are soft enough to peel.
