Even the most beautiful people can look washed-out and sickly under fluorescent lights. This is because fluorescent light casts a greenish-blue hue that changes the way your complexion looks and makes small imperfections more noticeable. Upstage unflattering fluorescent light by following these tips.

What You See is What You Get

To make sure your appearance will live up to your standards under fluorescent light, check your appearance using fluorescent lighting. Some vanity mirrors have a fluorescent light option, or you can take a handheld mirror to an area where you have an overhead fluorescent light.

Color Complements

When you wear unflattering colors, your skin appears sallow and tired, compounding the negative effects of fluorescent lighting. Clothing colors that complement your complexion will make your skin appear radiant and enhance the color of your eyes and hair. If you have a warm complexion, characterized by golden or yellow undertones with greenish veins, stick with warm colors such as peach, ivory, dark red, or burnt orange. Those with a cool complexion -- those with pale skin and people of color -- should try pastels and/or bold colors. Shades of lavender or light blue, jewel tones, and true black or true white will all be flattering.

A Firm Foundation

A foundation makeup that has warm golden undertones will counteract the cool tones of the fluorescent lights. Avoid foundation with pink tones because it will make your face look muddy. Choose a foundation that is close to your skin color and blend it well to avoid obvious edges. You can also forgo the foundation altogether and just use concealer to hide any blemishes.

Getting Cheeky

When choosing your blush, avoid colors like pink and red which can be exaggerated by fluorescent lights and appear too harsh. Stick with warm, natural shades like peach or rose and apply sparingly. For a natural look, complement your blush with a sheer lipstick or gloss in medium tones.

Eye Spy

Apply your eye makeup carefully because too much color or sharply defined lines can look harsh under fluorescent lights. Choose light eye makeup colors, such as rose, gold and peach, to avoid looking garish. Avoid blues and grays because these colors tend to look washed out and dull. Use black eyeliner and mascara sparingly. You can use brown eyeliner or combination of brown and black mascara for a more natural look.
