Best Ways to Lose a Double Chin

A double chin is a fold of fat tissue located on the neck, directly under the chin. A double chin is usually present on people who are overweight or have sagging skin under the chin due to age. A double chin can be removed surgically in more difficult cases, or diminished in size due with exercise or exfoliation in more minor cases.

  1. Exfoliation

    • If minor skin sagging is the cause of your double chin, you can tighten up the skin on and around your neck by exfoliating regularly. The old skin cells will be sloughed away and replaced with new skin cells that are tighter and more buoyant. You can purchase an exfoliant at your local cosmetics store, like Sephora, department store or drugstore. You can also make your own exfoliant by mixing one part tea tree oil and one part coarse kosher salt. Take a palmful of the mixture and scrub your neck and chin with it in the shower for several minutes, until the salt dissolves. Exfoliate your neck and chin three times a week.

    Exercise

    • Isolating facial exercises are thought to help reduce neck and chin sagging, including opening your mouth wide, lifting your head high in the air and stretching your neck. First, stand up straight with your feet planted on the ground, shoulder-width apart. Raise your neck so it is perfectly straight and press your head backwards as far as you can to stretch your chin. Then stretch your neck all the way forward, maintaining a straight back. Next, slowly turn your head from side-to-side, stretching it as far back as it would go. Then open your mouth as far as it will go and point your head towards the ceiling, stretching your neck. Repeat each exercise ten times.

    Surgical Procedures

    • The surgical procedure most often used to eliminate a double chin is liposuction. The procedure is done by a cosmetic surgeon, either in the surgeon's office or in a hospital. Local anesthesia is used and the procedure takes under an hour. Recovery from chin liposuction is not severe and usually requires only one follow up appointment. A chin strap is worn for several days following surgery, and is almost like a sling for the chin. You should be able to return to work a couple of days after the surgery and resume normal activities within four weeks.
