A traditional scrapbook.
A traditional scrapbook.

In the early 1900s, the classic version of a family tree scrapbook was a large leather-bound book displaying portraits of each generation. Typically, the pictures displayed were wedding portraits or group shots of entire families or siblings. Newspaper clippings of weddings, and birth or death announcements might be tucked into the pages. Today old family photos can be easily scanned and reproduced digitally, allowing creative descendants to craft unique family tree scrapbooks.

The traditional concept of a scrapbook is a book filled with pages that resemble blank construction paper. In the book mementos, keepsakes or photographs are taped or glued onto the pages. In the 1970s, scrapbooks evolved into an elaborate art form, where photographs added to the book were often cut into unique shapes, and stickers and embellishments decorated the pages. The old family photo album could be rebuilt in this fashion, yet for the serious and less-creative collector of family tree information, this method may not be the scrapbook of choice. For that collector, an extra-wide three-ring binder, filled with acid-free clear inserts may be the best choice. The family tree data, information or photographs collected can be placed in the inserts, without damaging the original documents. Pages can be reorganized easily, and if a book becomes overfilled, a new book can be started.

If a more creative scrapbook is desired, borrow the artist trading card concept. Artist trading cards are small cards (the size of a standard playing card). Each card is in essence a small canvas that the artist embellishes by using a variety of crafting techniques, such as decoupage, painting or stamping. The canvas might be a playing card or a sturdy piece of card stock, cut to the appropriate size. Instead of selling the cards, they are traded. Create a similar card for different ancestors. When creating each card, attempt to reflect your impression of that ancestor's life or personality. Like a baseball playing card, you can include the stats of that ancestor on the back of the card. When making your family tree scrapbook, arrange the cards on the pages so they can be removed, read and returned to the book.
  4. Altered Book

Altered books are a break from the traditional scrapbook concept. Instead of using a book with blank pages or inserts for adding pages, an altered book transforms an existing hardback book into something totally different. An altered book can have a theme, and if the theme you choose is your family tree, it makes for an interesting scrapbook where three-dimensional objects can be included. Decoupage is used to affix pictures or images to the pages, therefore scanning original documents and photos, and printing out copies to use in the altered book, will allow you to create a unique family tree scrapbook without destroying the original document. Secret drawers to hold mementos, windows and pop-ups also can be added to the book.
