How to Cook Elk Meat. Elk meat is a healthy alternative to red meats. It is a tender, fine-textured meat that is extremely low in fat and very healthy. It is as easy to cook other meats, and stays moist while cooking. Read on to learn how to cook elk meat.

Step 1

Decide how to cook the elk meat. Steaks, roasts and burgers are your best bet for cooking elk meat.

Fry elk meat steaks in olive oil along with a favorite seasonings. Oil-based marinades work well too. Grill elk meat steaks, but baste with a lot of oil or butter to keep moist.

Place elk meat in a slow cooker for a tasty roast. Add slivers of bacon, salt pork or garlic cloves for additional flavor. Cook at 300 degrees F until a meat thermometer reads 140 degrees F for rare or 160 degrees F for medium. Elk meat requires much shorter cook time due to lower fat content, so prepare to keep a watchful eye.

Cook elk burgers over medium heat in a pan or on a grill. For best results use an indoor grill such as the George Foreman Grill. Season the same as a beef burger and cook about four minutes on each side. For moisture, add one egg and one tsp. of olive oil to the ground elk meat before shaping into burgers.

Cook elk meat to less than medium done. If you desire it to be more done, cover the elk meat and let it sit for 10 to 20 more minutes while it slow cooks a littler longer. Cook elk meat very slowly. A slow cooker may be your best bet. Add in moisture for best results. Broth, water, creamed soups, wine and more work best.
