Ideas Using Felt Squares

Felt is an inexpensive and versatile craft item. You can use felt to embellish or create craft projects for all occasions. Whether you use it as a surprise gift or a way to pass the time, crafting with felt can be a fun way to fill an afternoon.

    Gift Envelopes

  1. You can use felt instead of gift wrap the next time you have a small gift item to give. Cut two felt squares to be larger than your gift box or item. One felt square should be 30 percent longer than the other. Lay the squares on top of one another and glue them together on three sides, or sew them. Once they are dry (or sewn), they become a gift envelope for your present. Put the present inside the pouch you have made, and use the extra length on the one square as a flap. You can tie ribbon around it, or leave it as it is for a reusable, decorative gift pouch.
  2. Puppet Friends

  3. Cut two felt squares into mitten shapes, big enough to slip over your hand (or your child's hand). Use craft glue or sew around the edges to attach the shapes together, leaving the bottom open (where the wrist opening would be in a traditional mitten). Then, cut facial features out of other felt squares and glue them onto your mitten to make fun puppet friends. You can go with traditional animal puppets or make crazy monster creations.
For an alternative to this idea, try making your felt squares into rectangles, ovals and circles. Fill with stuffing and seal all the way around, again using glue or sewing. Then, add your facial features and you've made stuffed animal friends instead of puppets.
  4. Decorative Accessories

  5. Felt shapes can easily become fashion staples. Use strips of felt in fun colors to cover a simple child's barrette. Then, glue on buttons or sequins for embellishments and your child's ponytails will never be boring again.
Use felt flowers in various sizes to make a pretty pin or brooch. Layer the flowers on top of one another, in increasing sizes (the base flower is the largest while the top flower is the smallest). Glue or sew together. Add a button or craft gem for the center, and stitch a safety pin to the back.
You can make a simple scarf by using a single stitch to attach felt shapes together in a strip. Cut out several hearts, flowers, or other shapes from felt in coordinating colors. Stitch together in a line, and you'll have a fun and easy scarf to give to friends and family.
