In today's era of baseball hats being worn as fashion statements, men's hat etiquette has kind of gone out the window. But for all you "old school" guys out there, if you want to "keep it real," follow these tips for when to remove your hat and when it's acceptable to keep it on.

    With the Ladies

  1. Gentlemen remove their headgear in the presence of a woman. However, if they meet on the street and begin walking together, it is acceptable to put the hat back on.
  2. Meet and Greet

  3. A gentleman removes his hat when being introduced to someone or when saying goodbye to a woman, a clergyman or an older man.
  4. R-E-S-P-E-C-T

  5. Always remove your hat during the national anthem, when the American flag is passing or during a funeral procession.
  6. Public Places

  7. In a public building, a man may leave his hat on while walking through hallways and in the lobby, but should remove it upon entering an elevator, especially if a woman is present.
  8. Dining Out

  9. At a restaurant, a gentleman should remove his hat, but since most restaurants don't have hat racks anymore, it is acceptable to keep it on.
