- Decorate your friend's front yard with novelty over-the-hill tombstones that announce the person's age. Novelty tombstones are typically available at most party-supply shops as well as through some florists (who will do the deed for you by setting up the tombstones in your recipient's yard). If tombstones are a little too harsh, try decorating the lawn with something else, such as pink flamingos or other yard items that you think are funny. Tying a large balloon bouquet to the person's mailbox will let the neighborhood know that someone has turned 50.
- Purchase a decorative cane for the birthday honoree. Many party-supply stores sell novelty canes fitted with things like horns and whistles for warning people to get out of the way. If you can't find (or just aren't interested in) a novelty cane, a traditional cane can make for a fun tongue-in-cheek gift and one that may be potentially useful in the future.
- Send the birthday person a bouquet of black roses on the big day. Most flower shops can make black roses with dye if given advance notice.
