Easy Potty Training

There is no law that says potty training has to be difficult, time consuming and frustrating. In fact, it can be fun, easy, and happen in the blink of an eye. The methods you use may need to vary depending on the child's personality and whether your child is a boy or girl, but there is something that works for everyone.

  1. Praise Them

    • This is probably one of the best methods to use and can be done in a variety of ways. When your little one has used the toilet successfully, you can give him a thunderous round of applause, cheer or sing a song and dance a jig. This kind of positive attention shows your child he has done something spectacular and sparks in him the desire to continue doing it so he can see you dance again.

    Let Her Flush

    • Many toddlers love to flush the toilet, and this can be used to your advantage when it comes to potty training. Each time she uses the toilet, allow her to flush her accomplishment on her own. This is not only a simple and inexpensive reward, it also helps her develop an extremely important habit.

    Use Rewards

    • A child love to be rewarded for something he has done right, especially if he spends a lot of time in the corner for things he may do wrong. To speed up the potty training process, you can create a surprise bag. Fill it with a variety of inexpensive toys and perhaps a few pieces of candy. Each time he uses the potty, let him reach in the bag and pick one surprise. This will teach him he has done something good. You can also take him to the store and buy him big boy underwear. Maybe he likes Thomas the Tank Engine or Diego. Get rid of the diapers and let him wear his favorite characters instead. However, explain to him that Thomas or Diego would be very sad if he got them wet or dirty; tell him he would hurt their feelings if he did this instead of using the potty. You'll be amazed how much influence his favorite characters really have on him.

    Target Practice

    • This is an activity that really only works for little boys. Place some colorful Fruit Loops or Cheerios in the toilet and tell your little boy to aim for them and shoot them down. The more he sinks, the better his reward. This is a fun game he'll love to play each time, encouraging him to use the potty each time he needs to go. This can even work when he needs to poo--just change the name of the game to Torpedo Takedown. In no time, your toddler will be successfully trained both ways.
