    1. Songs and Poems

      • Songs and poems can help students remember the sounds of words and letters because they are fun and use rhyming words. Create a superhero whose name starts with the letter G. Write a poem or song about the superhero and try to use as many G words as you can to describe her. Have the students draw their own superhero whose name also starts with the letter G. Ask the students to describe the superhero using different words that start with G, like great, giant and giggly. The Mrs. Alphabet website has an example of a character named "Gabe the Golfer" and a song sung to the tune of "Shortening Bread."

There are other song ideas about the letter G on the DLTK's Growing Together website. For example, the song "A Juicy Green Grape" is sung to the tune of "If You're Happy and You Know It," and "Do You Know the Gumball Man" is sung to the tune of "Do You Know the Muffin Man."

      Arts and Crafts

      • Cutting, pasting and coloring can help students practice their fine motor skills while also teaching them about the letter G. Give each student a handful of beans, candies, beads, cereal or other small items. Have the students choose a piece of construction paper. Tell them to write a large upper- and lowercase letter G on the paper. Then instruct the students to glue their items on top of the letters. Display the projects around the classroom.

Take out a variety of different colors of clay. Give each student a golfball-sized amount of clay. Demonstrate to students how to make the letter G with clay. Tell the students to make either an upper- or lowercase G. After the G dries, allow the students to take their project home.

      Edible Ideas

      • Using food is a way to excite students about learning and help them make connections between the letter G and words in their life that start with G. Send a list of items home to the family of each student. Ask them to send in a food for the class that starts with the letter G, such as grapes, gum balls, guava, grape juice, green celery, goat cheese, gingerbread or gingersnap cookies. Ask the students to share their food with the class.

Ask parents to send in a cookie with their child. Have each student decorate their cookie with the letter G using frosting, sprinkles and candies.
