Recipes for Ethnic Skin Care

The multi-billion-dollar skin care industry offers a range of products promising to help control oily skin, clear up acne, combat dryness and fight the signs of skin aging. However, not all skin care formulas work for ethnic skin. Often the chemical ingredients in these skin care products have the opposite effect or come with side effects for ethnic skin. Most of these products can be very drying to ethnic skin, and as a result many people are searching for recipes to create their own natural skin care regimens.

    1. Natural Ingredients for Ethnic Skin

      • Use fruit, vegetable, grain and dairy products--the ingredients of natural skin care. Moisturizing natural ingredients include egg yolks, yogurt, banana, avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, palm nut oil and honey. Natural ingredients that combat oiliness include egg whites, natural citrus fruit juices, cucumber, tomato and oatmeal. Some natural ingredients provide calming and antiseptic relief for ethnic skin, such as aloe vera, garlic, ground sage, teas, cucumber, carrot and papaya. As a precaution because food allergies do exist, always do a spot test of any natural recipe on your skin. If you develop a rash, skin discoloration or skin irritation, do not use the recipe. You may have an allergic reaction to the ingredients.

      Avocado and Carrot Mask

      • Try this recipe from Ethnic Beauty Central. It's a moisturizing mask that's used to fade age spots in ethnic skin. Ingredients include 1 mashed avocado, 1 carrot (cooked and then mashed), 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 medium egg (well beaten) and 3 tbsp. regular honey. Combine all of the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Mash or beat the ingredients until they form a uniformly smooth texture. Massage it onto your face, neck, hands and any part of the skin with age spots. Leave the mask on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse off the mask with warm water. It's advised that when using the mask on skin other than the face and neck, this treatment should be removed in the shower to avoid creating a mess on the floor.

      Egg White and Sage Peel

      • Use this recipe for oily and acne-prone skin to remove excess oil and tighten pores. It leaves a soft glow to the skin. Ingredients are 1 egg white, 1 previously steeped tea bag (use any type of tea of your choosing) and 1/2 tsp. ground sage. Place the egg white in a small bowl. Now take the tea bag and squeeze out the excess water from the bag into the bowl with the egg white. Whip together the egg white and tea for 30 seconds to loosen the gelatin consistency of the egg white. Sprinkle the 1/2 tsp. ground sage on top of the egg white and tea mixture. Whip the ingredients for 60 seconds. While bent over the sink, thinly spread the mixture over your face--avoiding, the eye, lip, nostril, and hairline areas. Lift up your face and swipe away any of the mixture that may move toward the eyes or lips. Leave this on for five to 10 minutes, or until you can feel the peel tightening on your face. Rinse with warm water and pat your face dry. This mask can be applied to more than just the face if needed. If applying to the body, rinsing the peel off in the shower is recommended to avoid spills on the floor. Application should not exceed twice a week.
