Liver Detox With Epsom Salt

The liver plays a major role in sustaining life. When it is damaged or overtaxed, our bodies can become toxic. An unhealthy diet and other factors like alcohol and some medications can damage and inflame the liver. The filtration system can get clogged with cholesterol and other toxic debris. An Epsom salt cleanse in conjunction with milk thistle can be used to detox and tonify the liver.

    1. Ingredients

      • ½ cup olive or coconut oil *

1 large grapefruit or ¾ cup fresh grapefruit juice (lemon juice may also be used--fresh-squeezed is best.)

        ½ cup Epsom salt**

4 tablets of the natural sleep enhancer L-ornithine--(500 mg) is recommended by The Natural Path website.

A bottle of milk thistle capsules

*The oil stimulates the gallbladder as well as the liver to expel extra bile. Any gallstones that are blocking the liver's biliary ducts will be forced out.

** Epsom Salt is a strong laxative that also relaxes the biliary ducts.

      Day 1

      • On the day of the cleanse, avoid ingestion of as much fat as possible.  Eat no later than 2 p.m.  This recommended by all of the practitioners that support this type of cleanse.  The water and Epsom salt can be mixed before hand.  Mix 4 tablespoons of Epsom salt into 3 cups of distilled water and place in the refrigerator to chill before beginning the cleanse.  Drinking this mixture cold makes it more palatable.

At around 6 p.m., shake the Epsom salt/water mixture and drink ¾ cup.

At 8 p.m., drink another 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

At 10 p.m., mix ½ cup of olive oil with the grapefruit or lemon juice in a jar.  Shake well until it is completely mixed. Drink the mixture as quickly as possible.

Take the sleeping aids and go directly to bed.  Recommendations vary; either lie flat or on your right side with your knees drawn up for 20 minutes. The key is to be as still as possible for 20 minutes. After that, go to sleep.

      Day 2

      • Wake at 6 a.m. and drink ¾ cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

At 8 a.m. drink another 3/4 cup of the Epsom salt/water mixture.

After 10 a.m., you can have some fresh juice. After about 30 minutes, eat some fresh fruit. Later you can introduce light foods back into your diet. Refrain from eating meat or fried foods.

      Other Instructions

      • Epsom salt is a strong laxative so you will probably have diarrhea-like symptoms. It is important to replenish any lost fluids with distilled water for the duration of the cleanse.

Begin the milk thistle directly after the cleanse. Start with 200 mg and increase through the week until you are taking 600 mg. Continue at this dosage until the bottle is empty.

A colonic or enema may be beneficial after the cleanse to wash away any remaining toxic material.
