- Every knight needs a sword and shield to slay dragons. Put together an easy sword and shield using cardboard and paint. For your shield, use two, flat pieces of cardboard, one longer than the other. Cut the end of the longer piece of cardboard to form a point. This will be the blade of the sword. Glue the shorter piece of cardboard, as a crosspiece, to the sword blade. Paint the sword silver. For a shield, cut a round piece of cardboard. Glue a drawer handle to the back to create a handle. Paint the front of the shield with a knight's motif, such as a rearing lion, a red cross or a fleur de lis.
- A surcoat was to the medieval knight what a sports jersey is to the modern football player. Wearing a surcoat into battle ensured that everyone on the field knew who you were. You can make a surcoat for your knight's costume from an old pillowcase or a paper grocery bag. To create a surcoat, cut the sides from the pillowcase or the grocery bag. Then, cut a neck hole in the bottom of the pillowcase or grocery bag. If you are using a pillowcase, you can hem the edges, or use craft glue to keep them from fraying. Use craft paint to paint designs on the front and back of the surcoat to match the shield.
- In medieval times, knights wore armor made of leather or metal. The wealthiest knights wore armor made of plate metal. You may not wish to make something so cumbersome for a child's knight's costume, but a gray sweat suit can make a reasonable version of a suit of armor.
