Crocheted Scarf Instructions
Crocheted scarves can be any length and any width you like. There are no rules. You can make your very first scarf with basic crochet skills. You will be so impressed with yourself that you will get to work and make one for every member of the family.

Instructions

You only need one (4 oz.) skein of a medium worsted weight yarn and a size H crochet hook to complete this project. If you are new to crocheting, it's best to choose a solid-color yarn (or variegated). A busy patterned or textured yarn will be more difficult to work with. Save the specialty yarns for your second crocheted scarf. These instructions will produce a crocheted scarf 5 inches wide and 34 inches long, approximately. Everyone crochets differently. If you crochet with a tighter or looser stitch, your scarf may be slightly different in size.
Make 29 chains for the foundation. For the first row, make a single crochet in the second stitch from your hook and in each chain across. For the second row, make a chain (this acts as your first stitch) and turn your work to the other side. Make a single crochet in each stitch across. Repeat this pattern, from the point of making a chain and turning, until your scarf measures 34 inches. Cut a 2-inch tail of yarn. Pull your crochet hook out and pull the yarn tail through the hook's loop. Work the yarn tail through the last row of crocheting. As your crochet skills broaden, try this pattern using different stitches, changing colors or adding fringe (see Resources).
Finishing
-
A scarf doesn't look complete until it is blocked. Lay your crocheted scarf out on the ironing board. Place straight pins in the corners and along the sides, into the foam ironing board cover. Make sure all of the edges are straight. Using your steam iron (or a clothes steamer), spray steam over the scarf (never iron directly on any crocheted or knitted garment). Use your fingers to adjust the scarf if it is not straight. Let the scarf sit for five minutes or until it is dry from the steam. Blocking your scarf will eliminate any uneven stitches around the edges.
