The first step in preparing for sewing in a hair weave is gathering all of the supplies. You will need wefted hair extensions, hair thread, needle, a protein treatment, moisturizing treatment and an oil-based moisturizer. The type and texture of hair to purchase depends on your budget and the look you are trying to achieve.
The first choice is whether to buy synthetic or human hair. Synthetic hair is much more affordable but not as durable as human hair. Also, synthetic hair can't be curled or flat ironed with a hot tool; it will melt if it comes in contact with heated appliances. Choose a texture of hair: Silky Straight, Yaki, Remi, Kinky, Curly or Wavy.
Shampoo and condition the natural hair first. The hair needs to be freshly cleaned before sewing in the weave. The process of braiding and sewing in the hair can be stressful on the natural hair, which can cause breakage. That is why it is important to do some treatments on the hair first. Protein, moisturizing and deep conditioning treatments should be enough to strengthen the hair and keep it healthy. -
Dry the natural hair completely. Apply the moisturizer to the entire head. Part the hair into 1 inch horizontal sections and braid it close to the head into cornrows. Section and braid the hair until the entire head is done. A small piece should be left unbraided if a bang is desired. Take the ends and tie them underneath the cornrows; you do not want them to be poking out under the weave.
Measure the weft weave along the length of the cornrow and cut it into manageable pieces. Sew the pieces in through the braids with a threaded needle. Sew in the pieces around the sides and work your way to the crown. After all the weave have been sown in, cut it to a workable length and style.
To style human straight hair, spray with a little oil sheen and run a flat iron through it; flipping your wrist at the ends of the hair so that it has a slight curl. You can spray with holding spray if you want it to hold its shape.
For curly hair, run your finger though it to loosen up the curls a bit if you want the wild look. If you want the curls to stay as is, just spray a little oil sheen and go.
