Paper FoldingMake a basic origami cup that would be useful for holding drinks, dry snacks or other non-food items.
Begin with a square piece of paper. Fold one corner to the opposite corner so that you have a triangle shape. Determine the midpoint of one side of the triangle and fold the opposite corner over to this midpoint. Crease the fold. Repeat with the other corner across to the other side. Now the paper is in a pentagon shape. Separate the two triangle shaped tabs extending up at the top of the pentagon, and fold one triangle tab down to one side of the cup and the other triangle tab down to the other side of the cup. Find the folds of paper that these tabs can be slid into and slide each tab into each fold on each side of the cup. Crease all the folds well and gently squeeze the corners of the cup to push the sides of the cup out so that it can hold something in it. -
Don't use standard construction paper to make an origami cup to use to drink out of. The inks used to color the paper might transfer to liquids in the cups and are not safe to ingest.
Make an even sturdier cup by using a double layer of paper. Start the cup with two squares of paper lined up and begin to make the folds with the double layer as if it were one layer.
Use regular paper and line the cup with a piece of plastic wrap to create a water-proof cup. If you don't take steps to line the paper, the Origami paper cup will not last more than a short time. Make sure that all of your folds are straight and creased well to make the most durable cup possible.
Don't ever use an Origami paper cup to drink warm or hot beverages. The heat of the liquid will cause the paper to disintegrate quickly and may result in burns. The heat of the liquid might also melt any coatings on waxed or parchment paper, and these chemicals are not safe to ingest.
