Types of Lobster Claw Clasps
Lobster claw clasps are a type of jewelry clasp that closes by itself with a spring mechanism and offers a more secure way of keeping necklaces and bracelets on your body. These claws come in various shapes and sizes to work with different styles and jewelry weights. The lobster claw clasp gets its name because it resembles the large pincher of a lobster.

Standard Claws
-
The standard lobster claw clasp has a round ring attached to the end of jewelry. It has a hollow metal section that contains the spring between the small jewelry end ring and the larger round clasp section. The spring is loaded by pulling a tiny lever back that sits on the top of the clasp to open the clasp where the other end of the jewelry string is secured. When the clasp is released, the spring is released and closes the clasp securing it in place. These come in a variety of sizes ranging from 5mm to more than 15mm in length.
Designs
-
From the standard lobster claw, many variations are made to customize the clasp to fit the style of the jewelry. The design may adjust the clasp itself or the attachment chain or both. You may find a lobster clasp shaped like a heart or have a heart-shaped balance weight on the chain it attaches to. The clasp may be more round than oval or have a larger clasp opening than the metal section it is melded to. It is also possible to integrate the round ring that attaches to the jewelry (not the clasp) into the entire design as opposed to being loosely hanging at the end. This may be in a figure-eight design or a slight bubble opening to give the clasp more security in holding the whole piece together.
Metal Types
-
Most lobster claw clasps purchased at bead and craft stores are made of sterling silver. This is a durable metal that does not tarnish easily. It is the ideal for heavy bead pieces with large semi-precious stones. Lobster claw clasps can be made of gold, silver or platinum as well for more refined pieces adding value to the jewelry with a more expensive metal. Stainless-steel clasps are popular for surfer looks, goth creations and masculine items. This is a strong metal, but tends to dull easily with wear.
