- Jasmine needs well drained soil enriched with organic material such as peat moss, compost and humus. Full sun is required for this plant to produce lots of blooms and become a bushy shrub. If grown in the shade, your plant will grow more vine-like and produce bigger, darker leaves but fewer blooms. Heavy frost can kill the plant, so if your area gets really cold winters it may be better to grow your plant indoors or in a container so it can be moved indoors during the cold months.
-
Water your plant on a regular basis to keep the soil moist, but do not allow standing water. About 1 inch of water a week is usually sufficient.
Fertilize once a month during the growing season, starting in late spring through the fall. Jasmine plants like an acidic fertilizer and using a water soluble food ensures that nutrients get deep down to the roots. - After flowering has ceased, prune the plant to shape and remove any dead wood. Throughout the season, cut off spent flowers to help produce an abundance of flowers. Use stakes and supports as necessary to hold up the stems as the plant grows.
