People use keratin treatments to transform coarse, curly hair into smooth, wavy locks. Keratin is a protein found in the hair and is used in treatments to correct dry or damaged hair cuticles. Keratin-based straightening treatments typically involve the use of flat irons, which seal the hair cuticles closed. Flat irons tend to break and damage hair due to high heat, so you may want to perform a keratin hair treatment without using the styling tool. The treatment might not last as long if you don't use a flat iron, but your hair will benefit from the keratin's conditioning properties.

Purchase an at-home keratin hair treatment kit. Prepare your hair for the treatment by washing it with a clarifying shampoo to remove any residue. Dry your hair thoroughly with a blow dryer.

Prepare the keratin hair treatment according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Apply the treatment to your hair, section by section, with a treatment application brush. Be sure to apply it all the way from the roots to the tips.

Comb the treatment through your hair to incorporate it evenly over each strand.

Blow-dry your hair while brushing it to create a smooth texture. Avoid washing your hair for four days after applying the keratin treatment.
