Cool Teen Room

If your teenager needs more space to entertain friends or to study, convert unused areas in your house. Attics are often ignored, but can be the perfect place to create a cool teen room. The attic gives your teen privacy while being close enough for you to keep an eye on what is going on.

    Teen Lounge

  1. Since attics often have angled ceilings keep the furniture low to the ground. Use platform beds if you want the cool teen attic room to also serve as a guest room. Beaded curtains on the windows or over the doorways offer funky flair and a retro vibe to a teen attic. Bean bags provide colorful and inexpensive seating. Teens can use bean bags as a place to play video games or talk on the phone. Use durable materials like laminate tables and microfiber or leather sofas to decorate a teen space that will last.
  2. Teen Office

  3. Convert the attic into a place for your teen to study. Since attics are isolated from the rest of the house, it will be a quieter place to work. Build in a window seat that can serve as a reading nook. Add in cool elements using bright paint colors and accessories like orange or lime green. Include inexpensive modern furniture like a steel desk or funky office chair. Line the walls with oversized posters of your teen's heroes and favorite authors.
  4. Art Gallery

  5. Turn the attic into an art gallery where your teen can showcase his work. Your teen can create a custom sofa by doodling on a plain couch with fabric markers. Your teen's friends can also help decorate the space. Paint the walls with chalkboard paint or hang large dry erase boards on the wall so your teen has a place to leave messages for friends or write poetry. Display your teen's art or encourage his artistic side with an easel and canvas. Place a large drop cloth or decorative linoleum mat on the floor to catch any paint drips.
  6. Attic Considerations

  7. Decorating attics comes with special considerations. If your attic has sloped ceilings ensure that your teen doesn't hit her head on the ceiling. Use the shorter walls as a place to put bookcases or drape the sloped ceiling for a romantic canopy effect. Place the furniture in the middle of the room and install light fixtures that are close to the ceiling to combat low ceilings. Decorate with standing fans if your attic is hot in the summer.
