How to Use a FoodSaver

G.K. Bayne

FoodSaver is a registered trademark name of a brand of vacuum food-sealing appliances. While there are several different versions of the FoodSaver, they all basically work the same. Food goes into a special plastic bag, the air inside is vacuumed out and the bag is sealed. Some models offer canisters for dry-food storage also.

Make a Bag

  1. Place a roll of FoodSaver bag material in the roll holder.

  2. Pull enough bag material through the bag slot to cover the food you wish to seal. Pull out another three to four inches of material. Close the lid.

  3. Set the "Seal Level" button to 3, 4 or 5 and press the "Seal" button. The lid will push down automatically. The indicator light will blink until the bag end is sealed. Seal level 3 is the standard seal mode, while 4 and 5 are used for sealing packages that contain more moisture.

  4. Slide the bag slicer from one end to the other to remove the new bag from the roll.

  5. Open the lid and remove the bag. Roll any remaining bag material back onto the roll and away from the machine.

Vacuum Sealing Food

  1. Place the food in the FoodSaver bag, positioning the food at the bottom of the bag.

  2. Place the open end of the bag on the vacuum channel at the front of the machine. Close the lid.

  3. Set the "Seal Level" dependent upon what type of food is in the bag. Meats and other moist foods should be set at 4 or 5.

  4. Press the "Vacuum" button. The process will start automatically and the progress lights will blink in turn until the process is complete.

  5. Open the lid and remove the bag. Store in the refrigerator or freezer.
