- Whatever the size of your family room, try to maximize space by arranging furniture against the walls, leaving the middle of the floor open for games, hobbies or other activities. Place the couch or your favorite recliner in front of the TV and stereo system and arrange other pieces of furniture in corners or at right angles to the sofa or couch for family use.
- The family room is usually where the family goes relax and not to entertain visitors, so its decor is usually more casual than other rooms in the house. Knickknacks, games, and books, DVDs or music are often stored in this room. Install shelving along a short wall to avoid making the room seem cramped and dark. Use lighter fabrics for window coverings, allowing in plenty of light. Bookcases can go under windows or in corners for easy storage, but avoid overwhelming the room with too much furniture or it will look dark and depressing.
- Choose soothing color tones for the walls like soft yellows and blues to promote a calming influence, but don't paint all four walls the same color. Try a different color for one of the short walls for dramatic effect. Display collectibles on high shelves so they are visible yet out of the way, reducing clutter. Use inexpensive and eye-appealing designer boxes to store toys, games and DVD collections.
