The biggest complaint about ficus trees is leaf drop. Many times the tree is discarded because it has dropped its leaves. Owners think it has died or is dying. Actually, it is a normal cycle for the ficus to loose its leaves as a reaction to environmental change. Once owners understand this hardy tree, they will be inclined to wait it out until its beautiful leaves grow back.
A nursery or garden center employee may tell you the ficus has lost its leaves because of its acclimation process. This is true, but not a very helpful explanation. Leaf drop is a survival reaction to change. The tree may think it is going into a low water period when its watering schedule is changed. At this time, its leaves may yellow and drop. A location change, such as lower light or mercury coming from paints, may cause green leaves to drop. -
Pick a spot in the room where the ficus will get the most light (preferably sunshine), if you have a choice. It will, however, grow well enough in lower light. Because this tree likes consistency, water it with the same amount and at the same times. This is the best way you have to keep your ficus tree healthy and full of green leaves. The ficus doesn't like cold. Keep your room temperature above 55 degrees F. If you want to give your tree the best situation for it to thrive, leave your room temperature at 75 degrees F during the day and 65 degrees F at night.
While you should keep your ficus tree on a watering schedule, the amount of water it needs will depend on the lighting and heating situation. The more light and heat it receives, the more water it needs. Although, still needing a consistent watering schedule, the tree's needs will change as the seasonal light changes. Because placement location and heating vary so much from structure to structure, it will take a bit of experimentation to find the right amount of water and at what intervals is right for your situation. A good place to start is by checking the soil. When it becomes dry at a depth of 2 inches, it's time to water. Over watering is also detrimental to the plant and may be another reason for leaf drop.
While new leaves are sprouting, feed your ficus tree once a month with an all-purpose houseplant food. When new leaves stop appearing, the tree is going into a dormancy stage and should not be fed. Watch for new growth to appear and begin the feeding schedule again.
