Exposure to the elements and excessive styling can cause hair to become dry and brittle. Some of the best ways to make hair softer is through proper hair care, routine conditioning and daily protection. A few simple adjustments to your hair care regimen can immediately improve the look and feel of your hair, making it more manageable and soft.

    Regimen

  1. Proper hair care is one of the best ways to make hair softer. Get hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks to snip off dried, split ends and prevent damaged hair from splitting up the shaft. Do not shampoo hair every day, as this strips hair of its natural oils and quickly dries out strands. Instead, cleanse your hair with a few drops of shampoo every other day. Work the shampoo into a lather on your scalp, concentrating on the roots. Let the soap suds drip down your hair as it washes through. Allow your hair to air-dry a few times a week, because drying and styling with a blow-dryer, flat iron or curling wand pulls moisture from hair, making it less soft.
  2. Condition

  3. Nourishing hair regularly with a hydrating conditioner is a great way to make hair softer. Even on days when you do not shampoo, rub a conditioner into the ends of your hair, allow it to soak in for a few minutes. Wash it clean with cool water for extra shine. At least once a week, deep-condition hair for ten minutes with a product that will remedy coarse hair and leave your hair manageable and soft, even after just one use.
  4. Protect

  5. Protect your hair from the drying effect of the sun, wind and heat. Before going outside, spritz a heat-protectant spray all over hair. These lightweight products perform well on any hair style or type. Look for products that contain organic, hair-healthy ingredients like protein, green algae, shea butter and aloe.

Switch your pillowcase to a silk or satin fabric, as cotton pillowcases can absorb hair oil and moisture, drying it out. If you color your hair, talk to your stylist about additional treatment options that will help keep hair soft and manageable.
