Apples have high pectin contentThe connection with how pectin can help relieve the pain of arthritis sufferers is not known. While Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center cites several studies that show pectin is effective for lowering cholesterol, treating diarrhea and even some types of cancers, there are no scientific studies relating pectin to arthritis treatment. Perhaps it is pectin's role in the binding of cells together or regulating cellular water flow, and the fact that arthritis can be caused by inflammation. This is simply a theory, and until there is a medical study to prove it, it will only be a theory. What we do have, however, are numerous testimonials of people who have tried the pectin arthritis remedy and found great relief for their arthritis pain. To read these testimonials, see the People's Pharmacy link in the Resources section below.
Pectin is extracted from the skins of apples and other fruits. You can purchase the extract in a grocery store, next to the canning goods section or jam making supplies. Most cooks use pectin as a thickening agent for jams and jellies, as it is what makes the jam thick and sticky. For the purpose of the arthritis remedy, purchase liquid Certo pectin and grape juice. -
Use any brand of grape juice and Certo brand pectinLet your physician know you are going to try the pectin arthritis remedy, so he can be aware of it and let you know if the pectin might affect any medication you are currently on. To mix up the remedy, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid pectin with 1 cup of grape juice and drink every morning. The People's Pharmacy also suggests a dosage of 2 teaspoons of pectin mixed with 3 ounces (not quite 1/2 cup) of grape juice ingested 3 times a day. If you have severe arthritis, you may want to start with the 3 times-per-day mixture and lower to the once a day mixture as your symptoms ease.
