- Navigating around Barcelona is fairly simple and inexpensive. Put on your walking shoes and get ready to cover a few miles. Organize your sightseeing to catch attractions near each other and in the same neighborhoods. The city is fairly compact and pedestrian friendly. Walking to your next destination provides a multitude of colors and sights that would be missed on the Metro or in a cab. Sometimes, just taking a stroll is entertainment itself. Visiting sites farther out may require a ride on the Metro or bus. Consider one of two options: a 10-trip card or a one, two or three-day pass. Both allow rides on city buses and underground trains, but determine which is more friendly on your wallet. Purchase these at any Metro station.
- Learning the ropes of eating in Barcelona can help you stay within your budget. Visit a local coffee house or bar for breakfast and order the set breakfast, including a coffee and toast. The set breakfast prices are lower than ordering the items individually. Eating a large meal for lunch is quite common in Spain. Look for the best deals at midday as "menu del dia." These usually include a three-course meal with a drink for an excellent price. Look for places off the main streets. Walking just a few blocks into a neighborhood can save you money and provide a more authentic atmosphere. Keep in mind a few rules when tipping in Barcelona. Rounding up the check by 50 cents is acceptable for lunches or light meals. Adding 5 percent is acceptable at nice restaurants and 10 percent for post-dining experiences.
- Visit or attend any free events. Consider traveling around the first Sunday of the month. On these days the city museums allow free entrance, including the Picasso Museum. Stop by the Catalonian National Art Museum on the first Thursday of each month for free. Check out Parc del Laberint d'Horta's hedge maze and garden for free on Wednesdays and Sundays. Spend some time people-watching along La Rambla or attend Mass at a local church or cathedral. Watch the locals dancing Sardana on Sunday mornings in the medieval center of the city. Relax on the beach by the Mediterranean Sea with a picnic lunch and a bottle of Cava. Spend the afternoon people-watching, listening to local music or reading a book.
